JUBILEE SYRINGE COMPANY DEDICATED TO GOD IN Thanksgiving (Photos)
By Sampson Enyongekere
It was praise, thanksgiving and worship galore at the premises of Jubilee Syringe Manufacturing Company, Awa, Onna LGA Area of Akwa Ibom State, as the management, staff and the entire Onna people, Thursday, February 15, gathered in awe and reverence to thank and dedicate the company to God Almighty for His faithfulness and grace.
The thanksgiving and dedication service which was conducted by the United Evangelical Church (Founded as Qua Iboe Church), Awa, was presided over by a team of officiating ministers amongst whom were; Rev. Umoh Umoh, Rev. Udeme Akpan and Rev. Samuel Essien.
Preaching on the theme, “A whole-hearted worship unto God”, Rev. Umoh Umoh who drew his text from Micah 6:1-8, stressed the sovereignty, supremacy, Immortality and Lordship of God.
Rev Umoh said everything on earth was the handiwork of God and that the universe belonged to Him. He maintained that all on earth was temporary except God and God alone.
The clergy man revealed that from Bible times, God had always demanded a whole-hearted sacrifice and worship to be given to Him and nothing less. He harped on the fact that God was a quality conscious God hence, deserved a whole-hearted worship and praise. “A whole-hearted worship is one that recognizes the Lordship and Supremacy of God. This is the kind of worship He expects from us.”
When we begin to count His blessings, all we have to do is but worship Him”. The Rev Umoh who reflected on how the dream of building the Jubilee Syringe Company has crystallized into a reality enjoined the people to thank God effusively, as it was by His mercies since no one prevails by strength. “It happened because the Lord wanted it to be. So, worshipping Him must be with dedication and commitment”.
He said the management of the company was not like the Israelites who refused to thank God for His faithfulness, and prayed God to receive the gratitude shown by the company, saying it is a step in the right direction.
The Akwa Ibom State governor, Deacon Udom Emmanuel, who was represented by the special assistant on religious matters, Rev. Daniel Akwatang, urged the management of the company to sustain the exercise and watch God grow the company by leaps and bounds. He emphasized the need for continuity in praise, thanksgiving and worship and said it was the only way to sustain God’s blessing.
The offering session of the service led by the managing director of the firm, Mr. Zubevir Gulabi, had a cluster of employees dancing and singing in gratitude to God for His kindness. Two popular hymns, “Amazing Grace” and “To God be the Glory” and other Soul lifting choruses was sang.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the Managing Director of the company, Mr Zubeyir Gulabi, who was visibly elated with the service, stated that the thanksgiving was imperative when he considered the love and the faithfulness God has shown to him and his team over the years.
He maintained that without God it would have been impossible to establish the Jubilee Syringe Manufacturing Company and expressed optimism that God would not let them down.
Gulabi expressed appreciation for the church, the host community and the traditional rulers for coming out in large number to grace the event.
Highlights of the event were the cutting of the company’s cake, choir renditions and prayers
Other personalities who graced the occasion were members of Onna Tradition Rulers Council led by the Paramount Ruler, His Majesty Edidem Raymond Inyang and wife.
President Buhari rejects Nigerian Peace Corps Bill.
Findings by our reporter indicate that the 30-day window under, which the president should sign a bill duly transmitted to him elapsed on January 31, 2018, leaving the National Assembly with the only option of mobilising two thirds of its members to veto the president’s rejection of the bill.
By implication, the Presidency has thrown out the NPC bill and the piece of legislation okayed by the two chambers of the NASS can therefore not be cited as a law in Nigeria and the outfit does not have the legal backbone to continue to operate as a legal entity unless the NASS mobilises two thirds of its members to override the president.
A top Presidency official conversant with the matter, confirmed to our correspondent last night that the President could not have assented to the NPC bill because there was no need for such an outfit under the Nigerian security architecture.
The source said, “By implication the bill has been rejected by Mr. President since he did not sign it into law within the stipulated 30 working days.
“By law, the Nigerian Peace Corps Bill will not fly in Nigeria as the President has not appended his signature to it within the period prescribed by law,” the official explained.
Asked what could be done given the fact that the courts had ruled that the embattled security outfit had the right to operate as a voluntary organisation in Nigeria, the presidency official said that the organisation must first derive its legality from the law of Nigeria before functioning as an entity of the law.
But reacting to the development, the Spokesman for the House of Representatives, Abdulrazaq Namdas, said the members would wait patiently for President Muhammadu Buhari to write the NASS on why he would not append his signature to the bill before deciding on what next step.
Namdas told one of our correspondents that the lawmakers were aware that the president was in the habit of giving reasons whenever he rejects a bill sent to him by the NASS.
“But if we wait up to a certain time and the usual excuses we expect of him does not come then the House may take a further action to override the president.
“If you remember just last week he returned three bills stating the reasons he refused to sign them into law,” Namdas said.
It will be recalled that the NPC has been having a running battle with the Nigeria Police since it came out as a security outfit but not yet licensed by the Federal Government, culminating in the sealing of its national headquarters in Jabi and the arrest and detention of its leaders by the NPF.
The running battle between the NPC and the NPF has also resulted in a lingering legal tussle between the two groups, with the court asking the police to pay the NPC N12.5 million as compensation, an order the police are yet to comply with.
The police have also refused to quit the headquarters of the NPC despite repeated court orders.
While the Senate passed the bill on November 25, 2016, a conference committee of both chambers was inaugurated on December 8, 2016, to harmonise the bill.
The House of Representatives laid and adopted its conference report on January 19, 2017, while the Senate adopted its report on July 25, 2017.
But on February 17, 2017 the police stormed the National Office of the NPC and arrested the head of the organisation, Dickson Akoh, and about 49 other members.
The police accused Mr. Akoh of using the Peace Corps, which was registered as a non-governmental organisation, but operating as a para-military agency, to fleece innocent young job seekers.
Mr. Akoh has however denied all the allegations and has since been granted bail by the court.
Meanwhile, CHAIRMAN, Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, APC, Niger North has said that the Senate will do what the Constitution specifies in case Mr. President refuses to assent the Peace Corps Bill.
He said that the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria provides for what should be done if a bill passed by the National Assembly, transmuted to the President for assent did not receive the assent of the President.
“For me personally I see it as a very good thing; it is not new to Nigeria but it is happening in many other countries so that was why in the first instance, the National Assembly supported it.
Black Panther is a 2018 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the eighteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
The film is directed by Ryan Coogler from a screenplay by him and Joe Robert Cole, and stars Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa / Black Panther, alongside Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman, Daniel Kaluuya, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, and Andy Serkis. In Black Panther, T’Challa returns home as king of Wakanda but finds his sovereignty challenged by a long-time adversary, in a conflict that has global consequences.
Wesley Snipes first mentioned his intention to star in a Black Panther film in 1992, with that project going through multiple iterations over the next decade, but never coming to fruition. A Black Panther film was announced as one of ten based on Marvel characters to be developed by Marvel Studios and distributed by Paramount Pictures in September 2005, with Mark Bailey hired to write a script in January 2011.
Black Panther was officially announced in October 2014, with Boseman first appearing in the role in Captain America: Civil War. By the end of 2015, Cole and Coogler had both joined, and additional cast members came on board beginning in May 2016, making the film Marvel’s first with a predominantly black cast. Principal photography for the film took place from January to April 2017, at EUE/Screen Gems Studios in the Atlanta metropolitan area, and Busan, South Korea.
‘Black Panther’ Poised To Slash ‘Avengers: Age Of Ultron’ 4-Day Haul With $216M
By the time the four-day President’s Day holiday stretch ends, Black Pantherwill have surpassed many of Marvel’s mightiest on the all-time domestic B.O. openers chart. Black Panther is now looking at the 6th best opening of all-time on a 3-day-basis with an estimated $187.6M per industry projections and a mind-blowing $216M over four days.
How much do moviegoers love Black Panther? The Ryan Coogler-directed movie earned an A+ CinemaScore tonight, Marvel’s second after 2012’s The Avengers.
On the 3-day all-time chart, Black Panther is just above Captain America: Civil War ($179.1M). Back in January Fandango reported that out of the gate in its first 24 hours, Black Panther outstripped the advance tickets sales of Civil War, however, analysts didn’t rush to comp the Wakanda superhero to Marvel’s other titles. They just couldn’t believe at the time how massive this was going to be. While Black Panther is under Avengers: Age of Ultron on the 3-day all-time openers list ($191.2M), the pic is beating the sequel’s four-day run ($204.4M). Black Panther has already left Disney’s Beauty and the Beast ($174.7M) and WB/DC’s Batman v. Superman ($166M) in the dust to become the biggest pre-summer opener of all-time.
Black Panther is now at $76.6M for Friday. Thursday’s previews of $25.2M rep 33% of Friday’s ticket sales. Similar to a Star Wars title, Black Panther was a big pre-planned event for many this weekend, with Fandango advance ticket sales driving 36% of Thursday’s preview figure or $9M.
We hear from Screen Engine/ComScore’s PostTrak that African American moviegoers at 40% are driving Black Panther‘s ticket sales. Diverse casts in films like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, the Fast and the Furious series, Twilight and Hunger Games have always yielded big business, but Black Panther with its near total Black ensemble cast is a groundbreaking landmark for Hollywood. Disney will continue to break glass ceilings soon after Black Panther: On March 9, the studio will open the feature adaptation of the children’s classic A Wrinkle In Time, which at a $100M-plus budget is the first production of its scope to be directed by a woman of color, Oscar nominee Ava DuVernay (at one point before Coogler, she was in talks to potentially direct Black Panther). The pic is currently tracking for an opening around a $35M four weeks out from release, but those estimates could increase. Disney has to be trailoring the pic on Black Panther. In addition, Disney’s 2019 live-action release The Lion King touts a large Black cast that includes Beyonce, Donald Glover, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Keegan-Michael Key, James Earl Jones, Alfre Woodard and Eric Andre among many others.
Black Panther in CinemaScore audience exits shows a 50/50 male-female audience with 25+ repping 66% of the crowd. Close to 70% came because it’s Black Panther, while 15% bought tickets because of Coogler and 28% because they are Michael B. Jordan and Chadwick Boseman fans.
Social media is on fire as people leave the theater: RelishMix is reporting that Twitter hashtags for #BlackPanther and @TheBlackPanther have set an all-time movie record since Thursday night with 559K unique Twitter posts in one day (100K per day is exceptional) — and that’s over twice what the social media monitor saw with #LastJedi which peaked out at 232K in a day back in December.
After hiring Boseman back in October 2014 in a five picture deal, Marvel spurred momentum for Black Panther by introducing him in Captain America: Civil War. Disney literally showed the media the first footage of the casino heist scene back in April during a Marvel press day. That footage became public back in July when the studio unveiled it at San Diego Comic-Con.
Disney aired the first trailer for Black Panther in June during the NBA Finals Game 4, clocking 89M views in the first 24 hours. In addition there was another trailer during NBA’s opening night on Oct. 17. Tickets went on sale on Jan. 8. This was announced during the ESPN College Football National Championship. Kendrick Lamar had a halftime performance during that event; he produced an album of songs from and inspired by the film. RelishMix notes “Panther successfully took a page out of other big social movies like Pitch Perfect 3 and Fifty Shades Freed” in harnessing the social media powers of recording artists Lamar, The Weeknd and SZA. Already Lamar and SZA’s “All the Stars” has cleared 18M-plus views on YouTube:
There was a massive synergy program with integrations in ESPN College Football Playoffs, and on ABC’s Blackish, Grownish, TGIT (Grey’s Anatomy, Scandal, How to Get Away With Murder), and Bravo’s Real Housewives. In the last week on ESPN, NBA All-Star D’Andre Jordan carpooled to an arena with Kenny Mayne where they get a rare sighting of the Black Panther in an integrated car chase cameo.
RelishMix reports that Black Panther‘s social media universe resides at 901M which is off the charts for a February release especially when stacked up against other Marvel titles and their first week SMU’s, i.e. Thor: Ragnarok at 858M and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 at 792M. Black Panther counts 390K daily YouTube views driving toward a total of 340M, which is immense, and nearly matching those on Facebook (330M). Some of Disney’s social media stunts for the pic included the first-ever video Q&A on Tumblr with Boseman. There was also a Twitter live Q&A event in NYC (Feb. 12) streamed globally and into 10 IMAX theaters around the US – archived for placements in Apple TV, Roku, Amazon (it’s a social marketing stunt that no other studio has attempted on such a mass scale).
Black Panther had a presence at New York Fashion Week on Feb. 13, working with such renegade designers as Cushnie Et Ochs, Ikiré Jones, Tome, Sophie Theallet, Fear of God, Chromat, and Laquan Smith who created custom pieces inspired by the film.
Promo partners included Lexus which ran a spot during Super Bowl LII titled “Long Live the King,” with fresh footage and clips showing the superhero’s sister and bodyguard using the 2018 Lexus LS 500 F Sport performance sedan to collect him. By partnering with Black Panther, The Toyota Motor Corp. auto brand was aiming at a younger demographic, and in the ad world, the younger the demo is, the more culturally diverse. According to RelishMix, the Lexus tie-in spot generated 4.3M views on social following the Super Bowl telecast.
Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan worked closely with the movie’s other promo partner, Pepsi’s Brisk Ice Tea. PepsiCo and Unilever launched an arts program in urban areas in partnership with Jordan providing an opportunity to young film, visual arts and writing visionaries to be mentored by established artists. Jordan directed, produced and starred in a Super Bowl commercial celebrating artists’ creative hustle and spotlighting his process for transforming into his Black Panther character Erik Killmonger. Creators had the chance to win an apprenticeship at Jordan’s production company. In addition, Brisk hosted an event for Black Panther fans during the NBA All-Star weekend in Los Angeles, CA, on Feb. 16-17 with interactive Marvel-inspired installations. The pop-up event showcased the nine new Brisk labels created by emerging artists to kick off and promote the Creators Class program. The labels will debut on all Brisk packaging nationwide later this month.
Lancome featured a line of make-up products worn by Black Panther stars Lupita Nyong’o and Letitia Wright on the red carpet.
Synchrony Financial teamed with Coogler and Marvel to award the Ghetto Film School Fellows program with a $50K grant. The Ghetto Film School Fellows is a non-profit program that helps aspiring filmmakers from local communities, giving them a better chance at reaching their dreams, free of charge. The students take part in a 30-month process in which they can visit sets, screen their films and find help to get into college. Coogler stopped by the Ghetto Film School to speak to students.
Industry estimates for the weekend of Feb. 16-19:
1..) Black Panther (DIS), 4,020 theaters / $76.6M Fri (includes $25.2M in previews) /3-day: $187.6M /4-day: $216M/Wk 1
Friday, 11:53AM: The first set of estimates are in, and they’re showing that Disney/Marvel’s Black Pantheris headed toward a historic weekend with $200M-$205M over four-days, $175M over three. These figures do not come from Disney. The Ryan Coolger-directed, an co-written pic with Joe Robert Cole should post an estimated $72M today, with last night’s $25.2M previews repping 35% of that number.
On a three-day and four-day basis, Black Panther‘s estimates are easily the pre-summer records beating Beauty and the Beast ($174.7M 3-day, $188.2M 4-day) and Warner Bros./DC’s Batman v. Superman ($166M 3-day, $181M 4-day). If these figures maintain, then Black Panther will own the 7th best opening of all-time at the domestic box office behind Captain America: Civil War ($179M). The pic is also on track to beat Marvel’s Iron Man 3 ($174.1M 3-day, $185.4M 4-day). Beyond amazing, especially for this time of year, but this holiday always works in the majors’ favor: ComScore reports that 23% K-12 and 9% colleges are off today, figures which will respectively spike to 88% out and 34% out. Over four-days, Coogler’s Black Panther beats the first four days of F. Gary Gray’s Fate of the Furious’debut by 86% (or $107.3M). Gray owned the previous opening record for a movie directed by an African American.
Universal’sFifty Shades Freed is estimated to take $5.5M today, -70% with a 4-day between $15M-$20M in second place. On the high end, this sends the threequel’s cume to $79M-plus.
Lionsgate/StudioCanal/Aardman’s family title Early Manis eyeing $1.1M today, $6.1M over four-days in its opening.
PureFlix’s sword and sandal movieSamsonis looking at $750K for Friday, $2.6M over the four-day holiday.
A huge shoutout for this weekend: Never bet against Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron singing together. 20th Century Fox’s original musical The Greatest Showmanwhich was slow out of the gate will out-sing Lionsgate’s Oscar-winning La La Land ($151.1M) at the domestic box office on Saturday. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul won last year’s original song Oscar for “City of Stars” from the Damien Chazelle feature musical, and the songwriting duo are up again this year for “This Is Me” from The Greatest Showman. The original musical about P.T. Barnum will earn $5M-$6Mover four days.
Friday, 8:24AM: Black Panther‘s previews are exactly where we told you we would see them and Disney is reporting $25.2M this morning. This is the second best Thursday ever for a Marvel movie after Avengers: Age of Ultron ($27.6M) and some nickels above Captain America: Civil War ($25M). Among pre-summer releases and their preview nights, Black Panther ranks second behind Batman v. Superman ($27.7M). Already, according to Fandango, 61% are considering seeing Black Panther a second time.
Imax auditoriums grossed roughly $3M last night, which is tied with the large format exhibitor’s results for Ultron and Civil War. Black Panther Imax figures also blew away the preview results of Deadpool which made $2.265m on 372 screens two years ago. Black Panther is in play on 404 Imax screens.
A bulk of advance tickets have been purchased by churches, youth groups, fraternities, sororities, and student groups as they celebrate the first major Black ensemble blockbuster on screen. There is a viral crowd-sourcing effort that has taken place called the #BlackPantherChallenge — which allows kids to see the movie for free. Frederick Joseph, a New York-based philanthropist, launched the crowd-funding initiative last month to raise $40K and help children in Harlem see the movie. The challenge fueled 400 GoFundMe drives that have raised over $400K. Donations have arrived from J.J. Abrams, Chelsea Clinton, Viola Davis, and Ellen DeGeneres (who pledged $10K to the Boys and Girls Club of Harlem).ere is Davis’ rally for the challenge.
PREVIOUS EXCLUSIVE: Writethru with demos, 11:20pm: We have a read on Thursday night estimates for Disney/Marvel’s Black Panther — and they look fantastic.
Earlier tonight sources were spotting the movie between $22M-$24M, and now the thinking is that the Ryan Coogler-directed movie about Marvel’s Black superhero T’Challa will clear $25M. Black Panther will either beat or tie with Captain America: Civil War ($25M) as the second best Marvel preview ever behind Avengers: Age of Ultron ($27.6M). This is also easily the second biggest pre-summer preview night ever behind Batman V. Superman which made $27.7M. On the high end, it’s nearly double the $12.7M what Deadpool posted prior to its record February four-day weekend of $152.1M. These early estimates for Black Panther are exclusively from Deadline, so if you see them reported by a rival trade, they got them from us.
Other records being broken: Advance ticket sales continue to go wild over at Fandango with Black Panther now their fourth-biggest pre-seller of all-time behind Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Star Wars: The Last Jedi and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. A few weeks ago, Fandango reported that Black Panther is their biggest superhero ticket-seller.
Note there is a margin of error when shooting from the hip this early. Tonight’s numbers could be much higher by morning. If Black Panther continues on this pace, it’s looking approximately at $65M for Friday (including Thursday), $161M over three and $180M-plus for four. Again, none of this comes from Disney.
It’s a special night and weekend for many people. Black Panther is a cultural milestone, becoming the highest-grossing title to star a Black ensemble cast. It will also be a record-breaking opening for an African-American director. Already, in ComScore/Screen Engine PostTrak audience reactions Black Panther is flying off the charts with an enormous 91% definite recommend (Typically anything in the 70% range is pretty good) and an overall 96% positive score and five-star rating. Those over 25 at 61% are the biggest crowd turning out with M25+ (34%), F25+ (27%), M25- (21%) an F25- (18%).
Regal cinemas and 270 RealD locations are showing exclusive content from Black Panther in over 270 locations at 6PM tonight, preceding the film.
Octavia Spencer has bought out two Feb. 17 screenings of Black Panther in Mississippi for those “families who are low on funds,” just as she promised in her Jan. 31 Instagram Tweet. On January 31, she posted that she was planning on buying out some screenings “in an under-served community there to ensure that all our brown children can see themselves as a superhero. I will let you know where and when Mississippi. Stay tuned. #KingsAndQueensWillRise#blackpanthermovie”
Akwa Ibom man who hacked wife to death wanted to kill elder brother – Village head
Four days after a tyre repairer in Mbiabam Ibiono village in Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, hacked his wife to death, the residents of the community are still reeling in shock.
Our correspondent who visited the rustic village to dig deeper into the heart of the tragic incident reported that it shattered the peace enjoyed by the small community.
The suspect, Nkereuwem Uta, allegedly killed his wife, Bella, a woman with whom he had five children, on Monday, leaving her with fatal injuries in the face, neck and the head.
Bella, who was in her 30s was found in a pool of her blood.
Some residents had said Nkereuwem might be suffering from a mental illness while others said he was racked by jealousy because of his financial insecurity and his wife’s beauty.
When our correspondent visited Mbiabam Ibiono on Thursday, there was a fresh piece of information on the incident, bringing a new perspective into how and why Bella was killed.
On Sunday, the day before Nkereuwem allegedly killed his wife, he was alleged to have been looking for his elder brother, shouting that he was going to kill him.
Saturday PUNCH was told that the elder brother, who was at church at the time was told by other church members to stay behind to avoid being killed by his brother, whom they heard was looking for him.
The Village Head of Mbiabam Ibiono, Chief Asuquo Uwah, told our correspondent that there used to be marital misunderstandings between Nkereuwem and his wife but that he did not think it could have resulted in him hacking her to death. Uwah, who has been the head of the community for more than 20 years, said he never believed such a horrible thing could occur in the community.
He said once in a while, the couple came to him for mediation over some of their misunderstandings.
According to him, Ukereuwem would sometimes accuse his wife of sleeping with other men.
When asked if some of those issues brought to him could have escalated to the point of the husband harbouring murderous thoughts against his wife, Uwah said he did not think so and that what could have caused Nkereuwem to kill his wife on Monday was beyond his comprehension.
The village head said, “I didn’t know what could have happened between them. Since I was born, I have never witnessed this type of incident before.
“We know that Nkereuwem beheaded his wife. If he had inflicted simple bruises on her and not machete cuts, the woman could have survived and be alive to tell us exactly what happened between them.
“I have been the head of this village for more than 20 years. It is something that shocked me. There was nothing else I could do except to arrest him and hand him over to the police, which was what I did. Nkereuwem suffered from a mental illness when he was much younger and before he got married.
“On Sunday he was seen moving around with a machete, saying that he wanted to kill his elder brother. Someone in the church tipped off his brother and told him not to go home.
“What we do not know is whether he went home to kill his wife because he could not find his elder brother to kill. He used to accuse the woman of sleeping with other men.
“Bella worked extremely hard for the survival of the family. As a petty trader, whenever she dressed the children up for school, she would leave for her business to eke out a living for the family. I cannot say whether his action was as a result of another allegation of adultery.”
Our correspondent learnt that after Ukereuwem allegedly killed his wife, he blocked the entrance to his home and threatened to kill anybody who dared to question him until he was overpowered by the police.
Uwah said when Nkereuwem was arrested and asked what had happened to his wife, he boasted that he killed her.
According to him, the pride with which the suspect claimed ownership of the deed was the reason many residents question his mental stability.
Residents of Mbiabam claimed that even though Nkereuwem had a mental illness in the past, he seemed to be fine in recent years.
Nkere and Bella were said to have attended church together on Sunday along with their five children. It was gathered that the late Bella was a hard-working petty trader and well-loved in the community.
But in Mbiabam, rumours, claims and counter-claims continue to explain Nkereuwem’sbizzare action.
Some of these claims include one which suggested that he went for a money-making ritual which made him lose his mind.
An acquaintance of the suspect, who pleaded anonymity told our correspondent that a spiritualist had told him that death was lurking around his family if he failed to take some spiritual steps.
The resident said, “The man (spiritualist)told him that without a sacrifice, he would kill his wife or his elder brother. He was told to bring some items to make the sacrifice.
“On Sunday, which was the day the sacrifice was supposed to be carried out, Nkereuwem who also went to church that day with his wife and their five children, did not wait for the sacrifice to be offered on his behalf.
“He ran out of the church just minutes before the sacrifice was supposed to be performed.”
A family source also confirmed to our correspondent that his wife asked him why he ran out of the church and why he wanted to interfere with the sacrifice despite the items that had been bought to carry it out.
“It was the utterance that likely angered him, which might have caused him to kill his wife,” the source said.
The Police Public Relations Officer of the state police command, Odiko McDon, who confirmed the incident, said the suspect was arrested by men of the Itam Police Division.
He also said the police had not been able to determine the motive behind the crime as investigation was still ongoing.
Mother uses dead son’s sperm to have twins (Photos)
Grieving mother who wanted to be inseminated with her dead son’s sperm achieves her dream of ‘reincarnating’ him as she is handed twins created from his semen but carried by a surrogate.
A grieving mum who agreed to be artificially inseminated with her dead son’s sperm now has twins after being told by doctors she needed a surrogate to complete her dream of ‘reincarnating’ her child.
Rajashree Patil, 49, was informed by doctors that she was unfit for IVF treatment using a sample taken from her son Prathamesh, who died of a deadly tumour.
She had wanted to conceive the children herself by being the surrogate mother, but doctors said she was medically unfit as she had already begun her menopause.
Instead, Prathamesh’s semen was used to fertilise an egg which was given by an anonymous donor that was not related to the family, before being implanted into a close relative.
The surrogate has now given birth to twins, and the mother is raising them as her own in Pune, Western India.
The surrogate, 35, has now given birth to twins and Rajashree says she will raise the little boy and girl, who are technically her grandchildren, as though they are her own.
She called the boy Prathamesh, while she named the little girl after her daughter Prisha, who will help her raise the babies in the city of Pune, Maharashtra State, Western India.
Rajashree, who works as a teacher, said; “I was carrying the soul of my son in me and was looking for a body to breathe it into.
“Doctors had preserved my son’s semen before they commenced cancer treatment to preempt any negative effects of the medicine used on him.
“Due to this, I have been able to get my son back.”
Rajashree was very close to Prathamesh who was studying engineering in Germany when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour.
Doctors in Germany collected his sperm and put it in storage while Prathamesh went through gruelling cancer treatment, and because he was unmarried, he nominated his mother and sister to use his semen sample after his death.
Prathamesh managed to complete his master’s degree before returning to India for an operation in May 2013.
For a while, he appeared to be doing well, but in February 2016, the cancer returned and by September that year, Prathamesh had passed away.
In May last year, Rajashree began considering using the sperm to get ‘her son back.’
Rajashree said: “I am menopausal, so doctors ruled me out for the pregnancy. A married relative offered to be the surrogate mother and she handed over the twins to me the minute they were born.
“Getting the semen into our custody was not easy and we faced a lot of hurdles. Money and time were serious issues but now I will take the responsibility of these infants.
” I am their mother now.”
The twins were born on Monday and since then, Rajashree has been quick to correct any visitors who have referred to her as their grandmother.
A photograph shows the unusual family who has taken extreme steps to keep Prathamesh’s memory alive.
Rajashree is said to have faced a lot of criticism from her in-laws over her decision but she has been supported by her daughter Prisha throughout the ordeal.
Dr. Supriya Puranik, head of IVF department at Sahyadri Hospital, said; “I am happy that through the development of science and new technology we are being able to help people relive their moments of happiness.
“At hospitals, we often see a lot of emotions and happiness whenever a woman delivers a baby and we have come to share in their moments of joy.
“But in this cas, it was a grief-stricken mother whose son was away for studies when he came down with the fatal disease and succumbed to it.
“We appreciate the kind of spirit she has shown throughout the process and congratulate her on having her son back in the form of these healthy twin babies.”
Cross River South stakeholders give Ayade condition for re-election
Despite the ongoing endorsements of Governor Ben Ayade for re-election, there are indications that politicians in the Southern Senatorial District of Cross River State may have placed some hurdles ahead of the 2019 election.
Loyalists of the state Peoples Democratic Party and other stakeholders from the Southern Senatorial District had on January 31 in Calabar endorsed Governor Ayade for re-election in the 2019 election.
The stakeholders, including members of the state House of Assembly in the seven local governments in the district, hinged the endorsement of Ayade on his achievements in areas of political appointees, among others.
However, in a letter dated January 23, 2018 from Senator Gershom Bassey to the state Deputy Governor, Prof. Ivara Esu, the attention of the governor has been drawn to addressing critical issues that were raised during an interactive session with the people of the southern senatorial district.
In the letter, which was sighted by our correspondent, Senator Gershom Bassey, had subtly noted, “Kindly assure our people that I have personally drawn the attention of His Excellency, the Governor, to a lot of the issues raised by them during my interactive sessions with the people of the southern senatorial district.
“The Governor has promised to address same. I am confident that where the issues that bother our people are looked into and addressed, we will have no difficulty getting their support.”
But a top party stalwart, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said areas that Senator Gershom Bassey did make public were more critical.
The party source, who was privy to the critical issues, said that projects that were for instance listed as the governor’s achievements since assumption of office had still not gone beyond the conceptual level.
He listed the proposed superhighway and deep seaports as well as the recent move to make single lane Calabar-Odukpani road to a dual carriage way as projects that had yet to kick off in concrete terms.
He also said that in terms of political appointees, the bulk of those appointed from the southern senatorial district were not being paid the same salary as those from the northern senatorial district.
The source noted that as the district with the highest number of eligible voters, there was the need to mend fences as the All Progressives Congress, despite its infighting in the state, was fast making entry into the political space.
“Governor Ayade should not undermine the simplicity and friendly status of the people of the southern senatorial district. He should tread cautiously in order to avoid misfiring given the erupting political warning signals.

N36m ‘mystery snake’ saga: More shocking revelations as JAMB official blames Boko Haram for missing N.6m
It was revelations galore at the just concluded sitting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) administrative panel on financial management as officials sought to defend their handling of public funds, The Nation reports.
Nine officials of the board, including one from Benue where a ‘mystery snake’ allegedly swallowed N36million cash, were probed and subsequently indicted by the administrative panel.
Another JAMB official in Yobe State told the panel that he could not lay his hands on tellers, receipts and invoices of over N600, 000 put in his care following an attack by the terror sect, Boko Haram.
Yet another official from the Kogi office of JAMB said he gave out the N7million in his care as loans to his colleagues who were in need of money to settle personal problems.
He confessed that he was also a beneficiary of the ‘loans.’
But the panel was not amused by the defence put on by the officials.
All nine were indicted for stealing JAMB funds. The panel thus recommended that they be sacked and the recommendation was forwarded to the Federal Ministry of Education which oversees JAMB.
The stolen fund was part of the payment made by candidates for registration of scratch cards.
Some of the indicted officials are JAMB state coordinators.
Sources said that, “The nine officials would have been sacked outright but for civil service rules that stipulate that such matters should go through due process.
”All of them are under interdiction. They have appeared before a disciplinary committee. A report has been written to the higher authority. If that report is approved, they will be dismissed and handed to the security agencies.
“EFCC will prosecute them. They have even appeared before the EFCC before. In the course of their investigation they have files with the EFCC which arrested and investigated them.”
Chief spokesman for JAMB, Dr.Fabian Benjamin, confirmed the development.
He said: “All the necessary disciplinary procedures have been concluded and the report has been forwarded to higher authorities for further action.
Apart from Benue, Kogi and Yobe state offices of JAMB, other offices probed by the administrative panel were Edo where N31m was allegedly mismanaged, Nasarawa (N26m),Kano (20m), Plateau (N15m), Ondo (N1.34m), and Gombe (N10m).
The Registrar of JAMB, Professor Ishaq Oloyede, announced last December that the board remitted N7.8 billion to Federal Government coffers from 2016 University and Tertiary Matriculation Examinations (UTME), an improvement on the paltry N3million per annum that it used to remit in previous years.
We Bring Evil Perpetrators To Justice – Akwa Ibom Governor
Governor Udom Emmnauel of Akwa Ibom State has vowed to bring all perpetrators of evil acts in the state to justice.
Emmanuel speaking Friday at the funeral service of Mrs Enobong Monday Akpan at QIC Primary School, Ikot Edet in Etim Ekpo local government area said “As a government, be assured that we will be hunting for the perpetrators.
The governor in an emotion-laden voice noted, “I hope you aware that we have gotten some of them. For the few remaining, we will do everything humanly possible to get all of them.
It is not all through human effort, but God holds the lever we pull the wicked ones into our hands even we least expect it.We are doing everything within our powers to bring every single person who perpetrated this ignoble act. For every other person of this nature, we will bring all of them to justice. So, many of them have already been gotten so far.”
Emmanuel, who quoted from Luke 22:22 that says And truly the son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed, pointed out “So, it is as it was determined by God.
God sees the end from the beginning. Nothing is a surprise to God. Before creation, God knew a day like this would come. The Bible says but woe unto that man by whom what we see today is taking place.”
According to him, “I want to say that death is an appointment that everyone must keep. It does not have a particular time. You don’t know when know when your appointment comes.
When something is an appointment which you cannot escape: how we die, where we die depends on the hand of God. The only aspect we do not have control is when we die. This entirely depends on God.”
The governor, however, commiserated with the bereaved family over the unfortunate demise of their sister, wife and mother, saying “This event took place in a very dramatic manner. I still remember that Sunday morning, my brother (Udo Ekpenyong) called to inform me about it. I feel the pain of the family.”
He said ” He is a very dependable and reliable man who is result oriented in anything he does. I loved him and still love him. He is a good man. And when I tell you that he is a good man, know that he is truly a good man.”
The Governor pointed out that It is because of Ekpenyong’s amiable personality that has attracted the number of royal fathers and dignitaries that have attended the event.
The Governor who also condoled the bereaved family over their lost assured that government will ensure that those who killed late Enobong Akpan will be brought to books.
He spoke of her exit like a parable“It is like telling somebody good night and the person would be wondering ‘Ah, you wanted to say good morning or good afternoon, but you are saying good night. Such is the situation of life we find ourselves. At the prime age of 51, she still had years to live…”
Mrs. Akpan, a sister to Udo Ekpenyong, the immediate past state Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, was murdered on November 19, 2017 in her family compound in Ikot Oku Usung, Ukanafun local government area by some suspected armed bandits.
Born 51 years ago, she was a holder of Bachelor of Science (Education) degree from the University of Port Harcourt and is survived by her husband, five children, mother, six brothers and five sisters.
Until her death, Enobong was a deputy head teacher in St. Joseph Catholic School, Ikot Edet.
It could be recalled that Late Sister Akpan was shot dead by armed men who invaded her home on 19th November 2017.
UYO STATE CONSTITUENCY: Monday Eyo’s ineffectiveness part 1
Rev Richard Peters
In order to achieve democratic governance, Section 4 (6-7) of the 1999 Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria provides:
“(6) The legislative powers of a State of the Federation shall be vested in the House of Assembly of the State. (7) The House of Assembly of a State shall have power to make laws for the peace, order and good government of the State or any part thereof with respect to the following matters, that is to say:
(a) any matter not included in the Exclusive Legislative List set out in Part I of the Second Schedule to this Constitution.
(b) any matter included in the Concurrent Legislative List set out in the first column of Part II of the Second Schedule to this Constitution to the extent prescribed in the second column opposite thereto; and
(c) any other matter with respect to which it is empowered to make laws in accordance with the provisions of this Constitution.
The simple role of the legislator is to make laws. However in making laws, legislators often do more than this.
Apart from the fact that they are elected to represent certain geographical areas and constituents which make them a link between Government and the people, they actually enable society develop and prosper by the quality of laws that they make.
It must be made very clear to the people that it is not the role of the legislator to build roads, hospitals or schools, but the kind of laws that they make can enable the quick and efficient delivery of those services and prosper society at large.
Uyo people let us ask ourselves a simple question concerning the representation of Monday Eyo, the lawmaker for Uyo State constituency.
How many bills has he sponsored?
How many motions has he moved or seconded?
What has he been able to attract to the good people of Uyo?
Just few days in office the chairman of Uyo local government has been able to translate governance into realities.
The people of Nsit Ubium, Abak, Ikot Ekpene, Ikono, Ibiono, Ukanafun Esit Eket are smiling for joy because they have a vibrant, active and performing lawmakers, who have in one way or the other attracted government presence to their areas.
They make good use of the industrial revolution of His Excellency, the governor.
My legislature is aimlessly folding his hands in fear and sited as a dumb in the house (chamber) without even saying ‘I concur’
All he does is to gather few women to distribute a wrapper of #900 worth each to like 30 of them.
Whatever constituency briefing he wants to do in few weeks to come is nothing but a ‘mercy or sympathy cry’ just because he want to return for a second term.
I was challenged not to air out my opinion or else he will send his boys after me, am ready to be used for his sacrifice, let him do what he likes, Monday Eyo should not try seeking for a second term because if other clans will be charmed to agree, ikot okubo and Offot will not agree.
Uyo can no longer be the same in 2019
I have endured a lot.
Let me relax and watch what his men both on the media and the world will do.
Monday Eyo is an ineffective lawmaker.
His second term bid is a failed plan,
Enough of his unperformed representation.
TOURISM CONSULTANTS DRAG INI EDO, POLICE IG TO COURT …demand N500m as damages
Nollywood actress, Ini Edo, and the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, are among persons standing trial for allegedly masterminding the infringement of the fundamental human rights of two tourism consultants, Mr. Joseph Utin and Mr. Ubong Ekpe, by arresting and detaining the duo without trial.
In a suit application dated 5th February, 2018, filed at the Federal High Court of Nigeria, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Iniobong Edo Ekim, SUPOL Dauda, SUPOL Chinedu and Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris Kpotum, are listed as Respondents, while Joseph Utin (Mr.) and Ubong Ekpe (Mr.) are the Applicants.
A Motion Exparte filed by the Applicants sought for “An Order of Perpetual Injunction restraining the Respondents, their agents, servants or officers in Akwa Ibom State Command or any other Command or formation in Nigeria from repeating the arrest or detention of the Applicants or inviting them to Abuja.…”
It also prayed the court to compel the Respondents to pay the sum of Five Hundred Million Naira (N500,000,000) as damages to the Applicants as well as a public apology published in one local newspaper and one national tabloid.
Reeling out the grounds upon which the reliefs are sought, the suit application disclosed that on October 20, 2017, the Applicants were arrested by the police officers sent by the Police Inspector General “in a commando manner as they were pushed and beaten by the officers as they were dragging the Applicants down the first floor of the building of the Applicants’ office.”
“The Applicants were forcefully taken to the Police Headquarters of Akwa Ibom State at Ikot Akpan Abia, Uyo, where they detained till 8:00am the next day being the 13th day of October 2017 when the officers took them to the Airport where they were flown to the office of the 4th Respondents at the Police Headquarters in Abuja where the Applicants were again detained for another day at the Maitama Police Station from 8:00pm on the 13th day of October, 2017 to 2;30pm on the 14th day of October, 2017.
“The Applicants were granted bail on the 14th day of October 2017 without knowing what they did to the 1st Respondent that led to the arrest as at 2;30 pm and they were thrown into the street of Abuja to beg for money to pay their way back to Uyo…”, the Application explains.
It further revealed that when the Applicants, on invitation, went to the Inspector General’s office in Abuja on November 14th, 2017, for a scheduled ‘interview’, they were told that SUPOL Dauda and SUPOL Chinedu (2nd and 3rd Respondents) are out for election monitoring in Anambra State.
On the relationship between Ini Edo and the applicants, it was stated on the Suit Application that the Nollywood actress cum aide to Governor Udom Emmanuel on Tourism had contracted the services of the applicants to develop a Tourism guide, a deal which they reportedly agreed a consultancy fee of Thirty Million Naira.
The Applicants claimed that they offered their services including designing the proposal for the IbomFest Heritage Festival 2016 which was however cancelled because of the ill-fated collapse of Reigners Bible Church on December 10, 2016.
“The 1st Respondent was taking the glory but refused to pay the Applicants or produce the Memorandum of Understanding as they agreed with her. When the event was called off, the 1st Respondent abandoned the Applicants, refused to pick their calls nor respond to text messages.
“The Applicants were aware as a fact that all the subheads highlighted in the Tourism Development Blue Print for the State were funded including IbomFest Heritage Festival to the tune of Forty Million Naira for the initial marketing of the project besides the sponsorship support from corporate organizations…”, it explained.
Ini Edo was accused of rebuffing rife attempts for an amicable solution.
The application however disclosed that the consultants are yet to be briefed on the content of the purported petition which the Police acted on to effect the arrest of the duo.
Justice Fatun Rilman of the Federal High Court, Uyo, adopted the suit application and fixed March 8, 2018, for first hearing.
Controversy as Buhari commissions Air Force drone ‘earlier launched’ by Jonathan in 2013
President Muhammadu Buhari’s launch of surveillance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, UAV, produced locally by the Nigerian Air Force Institute of Technology is already generating controversy over the claim that it is the first indigenous UAV, whereas former president, Goodluck Jonathan was said to have launched the same invention in December, 2013.
Buhari, had while inducting the unmanned aerial vehicle christened TSAIGUMI, in Kaduna, on Thursday, said, “It is a pleasure to be here with you all for the induction of the Nigerian Air Force Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, ‘TSAIGUMI’, Nigeria’s first indigenously developed Unmanned Aerial Vehicle. The significance of this accomplishment as a milestone of national technological development cannot be over-estimated”.
Since the news broke, there have been speculations that TSAIGUMI is the same UAV which the then president Jonathan commissioned in 2013.
DAILY POST had on December 18, 2013 reported that Jonathan in Kaduna unveiled the first Nigerian made unmanned aerial vehicle, UAV, named GULMA which was built by the Nigerian Air Force in Kaduna.
In his speech at the unveiling ceremony, Jonathan said at the time that as Nigeria continues to witness breakthrough in technology at various sectors, it was imperative to appreciate the fact that Nigeria has potential to do great things, charging Nigerians to continue to explore all available areas that could take the country to greatness.
The PDP in its reaction described the commissioning as a shameful act as its National Publicity Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan wrote on Twitter, “It’s a shame that same project former President GEJ commissioned in Dec 17th 2013 is the same project (first unmanned drone ) that Buhari is recommissioning and the @APCNigeria apologists are celebrating this Shameful act.”
Clarifying the issue under contention regarding the drone, the spokesman of the Nigerian Air Force, NAF, AVM Olatokunbo Adesanya told DAILY POST on Friday that the UAV commissioned yesterday by Buhari is the first indigenous operational drone.
According to him, “The other one was not operational. It was a prototype. It was not prepared to conduct any operation. This one built on the earlier one and it is a much more improved version. This is a much more improved version of the other one. This one has mixed characteristics… with so many other things.”
2019: AKWA IBOM PDP DONATES VEHICLES TO EXCO MEMBERS
Seven members of the State Executive Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Akwa Ibom State, Friday, were presented with brand new sports utility vehicles to aid their mobility as the General elections draw closer and in appreciation for their loyalty and magnificent works of moving the party forward in the state.
State Chairman of the Party, Obong Paul Ekpo, who made the presentations at the State Party Secretariat, Uyo, commended members of the party who contributed for the purchase of the vehicles.
He posited that the vehicles will boost the morale of the Party members, but however appealed to other members who are yet to be beneficiaries of the gesture to remain steadfast in their loyalty and support to the party, promising better days ahead.
Secretary to the State Government, Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem, who paid a surprise visit to the Secretariat, during the presentation lauded the gesture by the party and maintained that the PDP is known for rewarding its members in the state and in the country.
Those who benefitted from the gesture included Zonal Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Bishop Etim Ante, Uyo Senatorial Vice Chairman of the Party, Prince Okon Nsentip, State Party Treasurer, Barr Akpadiaha Ebitu, State PDP Organizing Secretary, Hon Saturday Akpan, State Financial Secretary of the Party, Pastor Joyce Udoh, State PDP Woman Leader, Deaconess Mmeme Akpabio and State PDP Youth Leader, Mr. Enobong Harry.
Goodluck Jonathan speaks on 2019 elections, Received Obasanjo in Otuoke.
A former president, Goodluck Jonathan, has backed the National Assembly for its recent re-ordering of the 2019 general elections as contained in an amendment to the Electoral Act.
In a statement by Ike Abonyi, special adviser to the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Uche Secondus, he quoted Mr. Jonathan as supporting the re-ordering while receiving the PDP chairman, who led members of the National Working Committee, NWC, on a courtesy visit to the headquarters of the Jonathan Foundation in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
The National Assembly Conference Committee on Electoral Act (amendment) Bill on Tuesday adopted a re-ordered sequence of the 2019 elections, which now puts the presidential election last in the timetable.
The sequence of the polls now has the National Assembly elections coming first, followed by governorship and state house of assembly polls.
The presidential tussle comes last as against what held sway in the last elections. President Muhammadu Buhari has not indicated if he would sign an amendment into law.
According to the statement, Mr. Jonathan reportedly said “what the National Assembly did would help in the election of quality persons into various positions.”
“Holding presidential election first will affect the quality of persons that will emerge in other polls because of the bandwagon effect.
“The ruling party, the APC should see it from national and patriotic interests since laws are not meant for persons in power at a particular time,” Mr. Jonathan reportedly said.
A few senators especially from the APC kicked against the amendment accusing the ‘proponents’ of targeting the president’s chances at the polls.
However, Mr. Jonathan charged his party, the PDP, to support the National Assembly for the patriotic act as he added that he envisaged a time “when presidential election will be conducted differently from the others.”
He also commended the newly elected Mr. Secondus led NWC of the PDP for bringing back confidence in the party pointing out that those who left will soon return.
“I believe that PDP will return to power in 2019 if we continue to build confidence especially as the ruling party has failed to meet up their promises and give hope to the people.
“Propaganda may help you win election but can’t help you govern and that is what APC has seen in the last 32 months,” the ex-president reportedly said.
Mr. Secondus at the event briefed the former president on the activities of the NWC since December when they were elected into office.
He said that the new leadership was already engaged in a number of activities aimed at rebranding, and repositioning the party with a view to regaining power in 2019.
Global Concord: We stand by our story, 2019: Udom drops 2nd term ambition
The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel, has denied a report in a local newspaper in the state that he was no longer interested in a second term in office.
Global Concord, in its latest mid-week edition, reported that Mr. Emmanuel has been offered the position of vice president by a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, presidential aspirant, Sule Lamido. Mr. Lamido, a former governor of Jigawa State, met with the governor and other PDP leaders in Uyo on Monday when he visited the state for consultation on his 2019 presidential ambition.
“The story in its entirety is false,” the governor said through a statement issued on Thursday by his spokesperson, Ekerete Udoh.
“The PDP Presidential hopeful, Alhaji Sule Lamido during his courtesy call on Governor Udom Emmanuel on Monday, February 12, 2018, never offered a Vice Presidential slot to Governor Udom Emmanuel neither was such an issue ever discussed or solicited,” the statement said, adding that the governor never endorsed Mr. Lamido’s ambition.
Mr. Udoh said the governor referred to Mr. Lamido as “presidential hopeful” throughout the meeting and also told him that God would determine who will be Nigeria’s next president.
Mr. Udoh, who described the report as “disingenuous and utterly malicious”, said the governor’s second term ambition has the backing of the people.
Global Concord has, however, said that it stands by its story. “You know politicians will always deny information that they won’t expect would get to the public as at the time they don’t want it to get to the public,” the Chairman of Global Concord’s editorial board, Unyime Ekwere, told PREMIUM TIMES, Thursday.
“We have it on good authority that a lot of people in the PDP, not only Lamido, have offered him (Governor Emmanuel) the vice
president slot because of his financial war chest, so that he will sponsor the presidential
campaign of the PDP.
“A source at the Government House, Uyo, told us that (the Senate Minority Leader) Akpabio
was earlier tipped for the position but because
of several cases against him at the EFCC, the
party is afraid that the APC-led federal government would seriously work against Akpabio. So, they are now going for Udom Emmanuel.
“We don’t manufacture stories, we write what
we hear,” Mr. Ekwere said.
Meanwhile, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the state, Umana Umana, has denied a newspaper report of an alleged rift
between him and the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC,
Mr. Ekere is also an APC member from the state. He is said to be in the race for the 2019 governorship election in the state, although he
hasn’t declared his ambition.
Mr. Umana, who is the Managing Director of the Oil and Gas Free Zones Authority, OGFZA, said through his personal aide, Inyang Unya,
that the report was “pure fabrication by thesame people who have been publishing one fictitious story after another about leaders of the APC in the state”.
Mr. Umana said, “the relationship between Umana and Ekere is that of harmony and robust collaboration by two leaders who are working together to shore up the fortunes of the All Progressives Congress to ensure that the party wins all elective positions in the forthcoming general elections in the state.”
Fortuna Sittard threaten legal action against Sunday Oliseh
Fortuna Sittard have threatened to take legal action against Sunday Oliseh over his claims that the Dutch second division club who fired him for “innumerable culpable acts” and a “disrupted employment relationship” with the players and other employees on Wednesday wanted him to violate the law.
Oliseh, who was engaged by the Eerste Divisie side as their manager on December 27, 2016 after he left his job as the Super Eagles coach in February 2016 under controversial circumstances, claimed on his Twitter account after Fortunezen announced his ‘suspension’ that the club decided to suspend him because he refused to play ball.
The former Nigeria midfielder wrote, “Due to my refusal to participate in illegal activities at Fortuna Sittard and violate the law, I have been suspended from my duties as coach by the foreign owners of Fortuna.”
Fortuna challenged the former Ajax player to substantiate his claims on Thursday or face legal action.
The outfit denied that they decided to fire Oliseh from his post due to his “refusal to participate in illegal activities”.
“Fortuna want to fight the accusations made,” the club wrote on their official website.
“In this context, the club will also take the necessary legal follow-up steps.
Fortuna does not recognise itself at all in these accusations, which were not highlighted by Sunday Oliseh internally.
“The case will be presented by Fortuna Sittard to the arbitration committee of the KNVB (the Dutch Football Association), an independent body, which will now make an assessment of whether there is sufficient grounds to terminate the employment contract of Sunday Oliseh.”
The outfit added, “Fortuna Sittard will no longer discuss any new unfounded accusations by Sunday Oliseh on the club’s website.
“Fortuna will take the appropriate legal countermeasures. If there are any questions from the side of the KNVB in this respect, Fortuna Sittard is fully open to internal investigation to show that the accusations are completely unfounded.”
The club on Wednesday, announced that they had appointed their youth team’s head coach Claudio Braga as the senior team’s caretaker manager “until the club has found a new trainer” after firing Oliseh.
“Several attempts by the club to encourage a change in the coach’s behaviour have unfortunately not worked, resulting in an unworkable situation,” the club said.
“The board of Fortuna Sittard emphasises that the decision to suspend Sunday Oliseh is not motivated by the current sporting performance.”
“The coach’s unacceptable actions have made cooperation between many people within the organisation impossible – from players to employees.
“Fortuna Sittard regrets the decision, but states that the club interest goes above all else.”
Google to acquire Xively IoT platform from LogMeIn for $50M
Google announced today that it intends to buy Xively from LogMeIn for $50 million, giving Google Cloud an established IoT platform to add to their product portfolio.
In a blog post announcing the acquisition, Google indicated it wants to use this purchase as a springboard into the growing IoT market, which it believes will reach 20 billion connected things by 2020.
With Xively they are getting a tool that enables device designers to build connectivity directly into the design process while providing a cloud-mobile connection between the end user app and the connected thing, whatever that happens to be.
“This acquisition, subject to closing conditions, will complement Google Cloud’s effort to provide a fully managed IoT service that easily and securely connects, manages and ingests data from globally dispersed devices,” Antony Passemard from Google wrote in the blog post.
As for LogMeIn, they acknowledged in their company blog post announcing the deal that they intend to exit the IoT space. “So the obvious question is, does this mean LogMeIn is exiting the IoT? Well, if you mean the IoT connectivity platform space, yes, we’re leaving it.
We believe that Google Cloud, now armed with Xively’s team and great technology – and backed by their platform and developer heritage and reach – are a far better fit for the future of platform leadership,” they wrote. They are probably right about that.
The company purchased Jive Communications just last week in a signal that they were going to concentrate on unified communications. “Last week, we announced a deal to acquire Jive Communications – a deal that will bring together LogMeIn’s renowned portfolio of collaboration apps like GoToMeeting and join.me with one of the best cloud telephony services on the market,” they wrote in the blog post.
As for Google, it gives the cloud business a stronger foothold in IoT with an established platform, and engineering talent, which over time could help build their cloud business further. Earlier this month, Google announced that its combined cloud business was generating $1 billion per quarter.
They need to find ways to expand that business to compete with the likes of AWS, Microsoft and other cloud market leaders.
This purchase could be a step in helping them to do that. Internet of Things devices require many different types of cloud resources to build, run and manage the devices and all of the data they are generating.
They believe that by combining Xively’s platform with Google’s security, analytics, machine learning and ability to scale, they can give customers the tools to build IoT applications on their cloud platform.
