2019: We did not endorse Bassey Albert – PDP Chapter Chairmen

Abasifreke Effiong

Chapter chairmen of the Peoples Democratic Party from Uyo senatorial district have said they did not endorse Obong Bassey Albert, senator representing Uyo senatorial district as reported on social media.

The chairmen who spoke individually on phone with this reporter said the purpose of the meeting was not what was reported.

Elder Okon Edet Offiong, chapter chairman of Ibesikpo Asutan said Obong Bassey Albert told them to bring the buses given them by the Governor so that he could give them fuel.

“The senator told us to come and show him the new buses given to chapters so that he can give us fuel. It is a normal thing. So I went there. We did not see him but those in his office gave us a little money for fuel.

“I did not know that he wanted to set us up, I would not have gone there”.

The chapter chairman of Nsit Atai, Engr. Chrysanctus Okon said the meeting they had at the senator’s liaison office on Wednesday 14th had one agendum, to collect money for fuel.

“It was not for any endorsement”, Okon said.

When contacted the PDP chapter chairman of Uyo, Mr. Idorenyin Orok said any report claiming that chapter chairmen had endorsed Obong Bassey Albert was a lie.

“It is a lie. We didn’t endorse him. We went there to show him the new bus given to us”

The chapter chairman of Itu Local Government Area, Mr. Victor Okon said he does not want to be associated with any story fabricated to frame him up.

“Endorsement is the order of the day, but that is not what we went there for. Let me explain what happened. I was called from his office that the distinguished senator said I should bring the bus given to me to his office and get money for fuel. I told the caller that I wasn’t driving the car at the moment, but the caller said it doesn’t matter I should come.

“I went there. The issue of endorsement didn’t arise. If it did, I would have asked questions. I wouldn’t endorse anyone without getting directive from the party.

“Giving money for fuel is a normal thing anybody can do in this season of love. I didn’t endorse the senator”.

Okon advised those trying to ambush the chairmen to note that elections are never won by endorsement.

On Wednesday, Anny Michaels, media aide to Obong Bassey Albert served up a story on facebook with a headline “Akwa Ibom North East PDP chapter chairmen endorse Senator Bassey Albert for second term”.

It would be recalled that on 8th January 2018, Anny Michaels also reported that presidents of students association worldwide from Uyo senatorial district endorsed Obong Bassey Albert for a second term.

Days later the student group came up with a statement emphasing that the report was false.

A statement by Enwongoabasi Akpan, coordinating worldwide presidents to the purported endorsement, says:

“USDCWWP is not aware of the Senator’s intention to run for a second term, let alone endorsed him as falsely claimed by Anny Michaels on his Facebook page.

“Various strategies are normally the indicators or pointers for proper adoption and endorsement: placards, communiqué, verbal speeches etc, are parts of those strategies in any political platform. While on the visit to the secretary, none of those strategies were employed when we made our speeches”.

Anny Michaels, Senator Bassey Albert’s media aide has insisted that the students did not write a rejoinder to his report.

2019: We did not endorse Bassey Albert - PDP Chapter Chairmen

Below is the rejoinder published by the student’s body.

The Leadership of The Supreme Council of Worldwide Presidents Uyo Senatorial District, Akwa Ibom State.

Press Release!!!

On the pseudo post by one Anny Michaels, SA on Media to Senator Bassey Albert, claiming the endorsement of Obong Bassey Albert (OBA), Senator representing Uyo Senatorial District, for a second term by Uyo Senatorial District Council of Worldwide Presidents (USDCWWP), we have this to say:

That OBA is still the serving Senator representing the good people of Uyo Senatorial District hence USDCWWP is not against our Senator.
That OBA has every constitutional right to vie for any elective position having fulfilled all necessary conditions and Due process.
That USDCWWP is not aware of the Senator’s intention to run for a second term bid, let alone endorsed him as falsely claimed by Anny Michaels on his Facebook page.
However, the group was invited by the personal secretary to the Distinguished Senator, Mrs Rose which we obliged.
Being our dear Senator, we harboured no fear nor assumed any foul play while responding to the invitation. Consequently,
Various strategies are normally the indicators or pointers for proper adoption and endorsement: placards, communiqué, verbal speeches etc, are parts of those strategies in any political platform.
While on the invitation visit to the secretary, none of those strategies were employed when we made our speeches, hence, the remarks, “… your speeches lack the necessary indices we expected to hear from you …” during their response.
But,
It is saddening, shocking, disheartening and out of place for Anny Michaels, SA on media to the Distinguished Senator representing the good people of Uyo Senatorial District to post on his Facebook page that “…Students Leaders from Uyo East Senatorial District, Worldwide Presidents adopted and endorsed Obong Bassey Albert (OBA) for a second term….”
Whereas we never mentioned such nor displayed a body language that could have sent such interpretation to ONLY Anny Michaels who was not the only media man in the hall.
We want the general public to discountenance such propaganda and falsehood.
As,
His post, leaves us with no option than to believe and conclude that the invitation extended to us which we honoured with a clean mind, was a ploy to scuttle the good and peaceful relationship existing between the students and our dear Senator which could breed conflict.
We wish at this juncture to:

* advise Anny Michaels on his reputation and the person of the Distinguished Senator who is his employer.

* desist from sycophantic and sentimental reportage

* be well vested with the ethics and conventions of apt and accurate journalism.
* know that YOU are too valuable to dent your reputation by constantly disseminating false information to the innocent public.

* also know that The Senator will still pay you whether you report or not. He is a good man, passionate and humanly so, don’t, in the bid to please him, rubbish your personality.
* be guided accordingly in case of next time. We will not take it kindly with you.

A WORD IS ENOUGH FOR A WISE.
