Akwa Ibom Community Report: Adiasim Community gets new health facility
The people of Adiasim in Essien Udim Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State were on July 28, 2018, thrown into ecstasy following the commissioning of a healthcare facility remodelled and donated by Engr. Oliver Okon Ebong Foundation, in partnership with Engr. Onur Kumral, a Turkish businessman and philanthropist.
The healthcare centre which was in a state of complete collapse and abandonment was officially commissioned by the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Governor Udom Emmanuel, represented by the Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Honourable Onofiok Luke, during the 60th birthday celebration of Engr. Oliver Ebong.
The commissioning of the Healthcare facility which preceded the Holy Mass organised for Engr. Oliver Ebong by St. Peter Parish, Adiasim, and the subsequent birthday reception, drew personalities from different parts of the country and beyond who trooped in to witness the epoch event and celebrate not just with Ebong, but with the people of Adiasim community for the new Healthcare facility.
For the people of Adiasim, especially the aged ones, infants, young and middle-aged, this healthcare facility and it accompanying benefit has brought huge relief to them, especially in the area of quality Medicare. The community which until the commissioning of the facility could hardly boast of any medical centre now have the luxury of enjoying a well equipped health centre at their doorstep free of charge.
As co-partner of the health facility remodelling in Adiasim, Engr. Onur Kumral equipped the Children’s ward, Women’s ward and the Maternity ward with modern equipments. This Turkish businessman and philanthropist believe that providing quality healthcare services to the people is sine qua non, hence his decision to partner with Engr. Oliver Okon Ebong Foundation to bring such facility to the people of Essien Udim. He pledged that more life touching projects will be provided to the indigent indigenes of Akwa Ibom State.
The health facility which is meant to provide free medication to the Adiasim community and its environs was commissioned fully equipped with drugs and other medical consumables. This is accompanied by well trained medical personnel who are saddled with the responsibility of providing first class services to the patients.
Speaking on the commissioning of the healthcare facility and other assistance provided the community, the chairperson of Oliver Okon Ebong Foundation, Mrs. Annastacia Oliver Ebong, said:
“This infrastructure is built for the benefit of the people of Akwa Ibom State. This is why we have today handed over this facility fully equipped to the Akwa Ibom State government. Irrespective of where you come from, as long as you are resident in the state, you are entitled to make use of this facility.
“Yes, for the people of Adiasim, I know they will benefit more because they live very close to the facility. Our people deserve the very best, especially the aged men and women in the area, including infants and children.
“Through our foundation, the people of this community have benefited tremendously. Human and infrastructural developments were the two main routes chosen to improve on the lives of our people. As at today, twenty males have had direct investment funds from the foundation, twenty males are undergoing skills acquisition trainings in various vocations. The same applies to the females.
“Through the foundation, twenty persons have benefited from scholarship and bursary to aid their educational pursuits. In all these, the foundation has been tremendously supported by Engr. Onur Kumral, a Turkish citizen and businessman. We couldn’t have achieved all these without such huge support from him.”
This is obviously not the first time these two personalities have provided assistance to this community, especially in the area of corporate social responsibility. In 2016 for instance, these two personalities through Oliver Okon Ebong Foundation, donated five hundred school desks to Pupils in five different primary schools in Adiasim. This was accompanied by one hundred tables and chairs to teachers of these schools. It also donated free exercise books to several schools across the area in support of the free and compulsory education in Akwa Ibom State.
The people of Adiasim expressed their appreciation for the impact the foundation was making in different aspect of development in the area. These were the reactions of some members of the community.
Mr. Jude Akpan a local entrepreneur said: “We thank Engr. Oliver Ebong and his Foundation for providing this much needed health care centre to Adiasim people. This medical centre will go a long way to saving the lives of our people. It was quite difficult before to get access to health facility but with this health centre fully remodelled and commissioned, we are sure of quality healthcare services. We are very happy and pray God to bless and enable the foundation more.”
On her part, Mrs. Alice Inyang, a trader, who resides few distance away from the facility said: “We are so happy that Engr. Oliver Ebong and his partners have demonstrated love by giving back to the society from the little they have. In the past, plenty of our aged and infants have lost their lives because of lack of adequate Medicare. Now we believe that this facility will provide solution to our health challenges. We will not just enjoy the facility; we will protect it from vandalisation.”
Ekpeyong Asukwo, one of the beneficiaries of the Oliver Ebong Foundation scholarship scheme said: “I really do not know how miserable my life would have been and how I would have further my education if not for the scholarship given me from Engr. Oliver Ebong Foundation. Now I am a final year student of Civil Engineering and will be graduating next year. This foundation has given my life a direction. Make God Almighty bless him and his family.”
For Obong Paulinus Mkpa, a traditional father in Adiasim, “Engr. Oliver Ebong is among the greatest philanthropist the state has ever had, we as a people are so proud to have him as a son.
