Akwa Ibom State PDP loses 500 members to APC
The exodus from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom State continued on Friday with the defection of over 500 PDP members in the two wards of Ukpum Ete Clan in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area.
Led by a former PDP chairmanship aspirant, Mr. Ndifreke Hanson the defectors joined the APC during a ceremony held at Ukpum Ete Civic Centre.
Mr. Hanson who spoke on behalf of the defectors said they decided to join APC, having noticed the politics of inclusion played in the party unlike PDP where Ukpum Ete was relegated in the scheme of things among Ikot Abasi’s five clans.
He predicted a clean sweep by the APC of all elective positions in the clan and local government area in 2019.
Receiving the defectors, the Akwa Ibom South Senatorial APC Chairman, Elder Emmanuel Oton commended them for taking a courageous decision and promised them equal opportunities as old members in APC.
He said with the declaration of President Muhammadu Buhari to run for a second term, APC was set to record a huge victory in the 2019 elections.
The Special Assistant on Administration to the Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Pastor Udo Isaiah who is from Ukpum Ete, said PDP had nothing to offer Ikot Abasi people and commended the people for their steadfast support for the APC.
He said with the assent of the NDDC budget by President Buhari, Ikot Abasi and the rest of Akwa Ibom State and the Niger Delta region would benefit from more projects because the NDDC Managing Director, Obong Nsima Ekere was passionate about the development of the region.
He announced the donation of N1 million to kick start an empowerment programme for female traders of his clan, promising that the gesture would subsequently be extended to other clans of the area.
A former Member of House of Representatives for Ikot Abasi Federal Constituency, Dr. Akpan Micah Umoh who chaired the ceremony, decried the low level of industrialization by the State Government and said that Obong Nsima Ekere, having been tested and delivering at NDDC, would take the state to industrial heights if he agreed to run for Governor as being popularly clamoured by the people of the state.
He described the State Government’s coconut project in Mkpat Enin and Eastern Obolo as a failed project because 99 % of the coconut plants had died.
The Akwa Ibom South Senatorial APC Women Leader, Evangelist Deborah Ikpong hailed the performance of Obong Ekere at NDDC and pledged that APC women will continue to work hard for the success the party.
The Ikot Abasi APC Chapter Chairman, Mr. Ubong Ekpo said with the defection, it was clear that Ukpum Ete was 100 % APC and predicted an all-round convincing victory for the party in Ukpum Ete, Ikot Abasi and Akwa Ibom in the 2019 elections.
A two-time elected Chairman of Ikot Abasi Local Government, Prince Enobong Ufot commended Ukpum Ete people for their unflinching support for APC and Obong Nsima Ekere and urged them to take advantage of the Continuous Voters Registration exercise to enable the creation of more units for them.
A former Transition Chairman of Ikot Abasi Local Government, Engr Uko Ekpe said with all the bigwigs of Ukpum Ete in APC, PDP was finished in the clan.
