Champions League Draw: Chelsea to face Barcelona in last 16 of Champions League

Chelsea to face Barcelona in last 16 of the Champions League draw … while Manchester United face Sevilla, Tottenham face Juventus and Real Madrid clash with Paris Saint-Germain.

  • Chelsea have been drawn against Barcelona in the Champions League last 16
  • Manchester United face Sevilla, while Tottenham play Italian giants Juventus
  • Liverpool will play Porto, with Manchester City drawn against Swiss side Basle
  • Reigning champions Real Madrid face a glamour tie against Paris Saint-Germain
  • Barcelona and Chelsea will renew their long-running European rivalry after the two giants were drawn against each other in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Antonio Conte’s side surrendered top spot in Group C to Roma and now face the unenviable task of a trip to the Nou Camp in the knockout stages.

Tottenham, who earned the most points than any other team in the group stages, will face Italian champions Juventus, who finished behind Barcelona in Group D.

  • Manchester City, meanwhile, were handed a favourable draw against Basle, while Liverpool’s reward for finishing top of Group E is a last-16 clash against Porto.

To complete the English contingent, Manchester United will face Spanish outfit Sevilla for a place in the last eight.

It was the first time since 2003-4 that five teams from the same country made it to the knockout stages.

Monday’s draw also produced a glamorous showdown between reigning champions Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea and Barcelona have met 15 times in European competition, with both sides winning five apiece and the other five ending in draws.

They have shared some of the most iconic moments in the recent history of the Champions League, notably when Fernando Torres’ late goal secured 10-man Chelsea’s spot in the final in 2012.

  • ‘I think Barcelona one of those games over the years that has not only produced exciting fixtures but also controversy,’ Chelsea secretary David Barnard said.

‘We had our most famous victory at the Nou Camp when we went to the final in Munich (in 2012)… There have been a lot of interesting games we have had against them.

‘Bookmakers will probably make us the longest odds of any of the English teams but they should remember we have more players who have been than done it… they shouldn’t underestimate us.
