Sports has been identified as key to grassroot development. Akwa Ibom State Governor, Udom Emmanuel made the recommendation during the final of Udom for 2019 Unity Cup, held in Uyo, Thursday.
Represented by his Senior Special Adviser on Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, Governor Emmanuel said sports has the potentials of transforming lives of people at the grassroots level, noting that most big names dominating the sports industry began at the grassroots level.
The Governor praised the tournament sponsor (Chief Eyo Okon) for keying into his transformation drive and empowering youths of the state through sports. He urged stakeholders to keep investing in sports, which he said the benefits are enormous and sustainable.
Earlier, the Chairman of GRASOF, Chief Uko Akpabio said the tournament was geared towards discovering talents and galvanizing support for Governor Emmanuel’s second term bid.
Akpabio lauded the Governor for massively transforming the state by providing quality infrastructures that will promote sports across ten federal constituencies of the state, and creating enabling environment for development of youths by instituting the annual sports festival for primary and secondary schools in the state.
Greater Tomorrow Academy of Uyo edged Gubbles FC of Onna by a lone goal to emerge champions in the final played at the Uyo Township Stadium.
The tournament was organized by the Grassroots Sports Federation (GRASOF), South South Zone, with twenty five teams participating.
