Fire Outbreak At AFAHA-UBE SUB Power Station *No functional fire fighting equipments in Akwa Ibom State
By Michael Matthew
The Port Harcourt Electricity Development Company (PHEDC) power substation at Afaha Ube, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State was gutted by fire on Thursday.
It was gathered that there was huge blast at the sub-station at about 1:00 p.m. and this sparked the fire.
A state that has received billions of Naira every month from the FAC, atleast in the past 18 years, Akwa Ibom State has received close to N5Trillion, watched helplessly as the only feeder power station in the state capital got burnt down for over an hour without a response from an institution whose primary assignment is to fight fire of any degree.
The fire, according to eyewitnesses, lasted about one hour.
The state fire service did not respond to the emergency call, citing lack of water and other logistics.
How can a state be industrialized when institutions of development are wished away easily by neglects of other essential equipments of government.
But for the quick intervention of Julius Berger trucks which arrived with water to battle the inferno, it would have extended to other areas, as residents around the substation were seen throwing out their valuables from their homes.
AKS Fire service department are under the supervision of the Ministry of Works, overseen by the Dean of Commissioners, Ephraim Inyang, who thinks the only infrastructural development Akwa Ibom State should experience is the construction of substandard roads across the state, this Ministry tout themselves as the MR Know it All.
The State Fire Service had recently written to the House Committee on Works that they were short of firefighting equipments, till date their plea has fallen on deaf ears.
It’s a pity for my state.
Now the entire State capital has been thrown into darkness for as long as God knows when PHCN would raise money enough to fix the damaged station.
Let’s watch out for government excuses in the coming days.
The fact that the fire incident occurred a few meters away from where Gov Udom Emmanuel received a fictitious endorsement from a few Women traders in Itam Market arranged and sponsored by his SA on Market Matters today leaves much to be desired.
The Governor who is more interested in his second term bid than in administering the State is going around the entire State seeking for endorsements, I am informed the Association of (Jobless) Labourers, who hang around PDP Secretariat on four lane have agreed in principle to endorse the Governor towards the end of the month in his second term bid.
