Moses Ekpo under pressure to resign
…as AKHA back tracks on impeachment plots
All is not well with the Akwa Ibom State Executive Council as the feud between Godswill Akpabio and his successor Udom Emmanuel is taking a bitter toll on governance in the state.
As at the last count two Exco members Udo Ekpenyong and Etekamba Umoren were consumed even when the commissioner for Information and Strategy Charles Udoh says their relief of appointment is part of strategies adopted by the government to continue strengthening the Exco for greater work.
Another Exco member who may likely be consumed in the Akpabio, Udom inferno may be the Akwa Ibom State Deputy Governor, Mr. Moses Ekpo whom THE INK gathered has come under intense pressure to resign his position and to say as a result of personal reasons.
Our eagle eyed reporter understands that there is so much anger in the inner caucus of Governor Udom Emmanuel that Mr. Moses Ekpo was the one that called the independence Hall meeting in Abak that Godswill Akpabio used the platform to throw tantrums on the state Governor.
Those who confided in our reporter maintained that ever since that unceremonious position came from Akpabio, that the relationship between Governor Udom Emmanuel and his Deputy Moses Ekpo has been less than cordial.
Government House sources maintained to THE INK reporter that the unfettered access Moses Ekpo hitherto had to Udom looks bridged as the old man do not really access the Governor as usual as he used to.
Those who work in the Deputy Governor’s office hinted our reporters that Uncle Mo himself has realized the effect Akpabio’s inglorious statement has done to his relationship with the Governor and hence why he seems to be relapsing in his confusion.
THE INK understands that Udom’s right hand men find it reluctant to believe that Moses Ekpo did not know what Senator Akpabio was going to say on that meeting. They are also of the opinion that Moses Ekpo coordinated and organized an event that encouraged the former Governor to throw tantrums on the state Governor.
THE INK gathered that Udom’s men are even more angry that the Deputy Governor after that incidence never did anything to show his disapproval of the statements the former Governor made against his successor.
Many sources say, the realization of the anger Udom’s men is nursing against the Deputy Governor has seriously affected the way and manner Moses Ekpo is reacting to issues in governance.
This development in the state Exco THE INK was informed has not greeted Mr. Moses Ekpo very well especially as most of those working directly with the state Governor now see the Deputy Governor as a traitor and one who cannot defend his boss in times like this.
Sources very close to Uncle Mo while exchanging views with our reporters said, the state Deputy Governor does not really enjoy being treated with so much level of suspicions and had at a time very recently contemplated resigning from his position so as to avoid what one of his aides described as insult from some small boys in the state Exco.
Meanwhile, to demonstrate their anger, some Udom’s men THE INK understand have made surreptitious moves to the House of Assembly lobbying to get the Deputy Governor impeached. It was not clear as at press time how the deal was arrived at but our reporters understand that the news of an impending impeachment had spread like wild fire forcing the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to issue a statement by her Chairman committee on Information Barr Ime Okon denying an impeachment plot.
The statement from the House of Assembly says the Assembly is not considering any impeachment as no officer of state had done anything that warrants an impeachment.
Many citizens of the state however viewed the Assembly’s letter as a soft landing for officials.
The information managers of the Deputy Governor refused to comment on the matter when contacted.
Below is the Press Statement in full
ALLEGED IMPEACHMENT PLOT
The Akwa Ibom state House of Assembly is aware of sinister plots by some mischievous elements to plant stories in the media alleging “impeachment plans” by the Honourable House against certain government officials in the state. This is the latest antic in the detractors’ strive to cause disaffection and tension between the legislative and executive arms of government in the state. The house implores members of the public to disregard such misleading stories when and wherever they are reported as there is no single truth to them.
It is important to iterate the commitment of the 6th assembly to the development goals of the current administration of His Excellency, Deacon Udom Emmanuel. The House as currently constituted is upbeat about the growth agenda of this administration and would therefore not involve in unnecessary politicking which might erode the governor’s numerous development efforts. As lawmakers, our focus remains cardinally on our key mandate of making sound laws and ensuring sustainable growth and improved welfare of Akwa Ibom people through effective oversight rather than on obnoxious politics.
We urge our people to steer clear of distractive media reports and rather concern themselves with the undertakings of this administration through holding government accountable on the score of its promises. We also encourage our friends in the media to continue to take advantage of the state legislature’s open door policy to verify their reports in order to help the assembly execute its agenda of collaborating with the executive towards building an educated, united, healthy, and prosperous Akwa Ibom state.
Rt. Hon. (Barr) Ime Okon
Deputy House Leader and Chairman, House Committee on Information
