Photos : Ntiat/Mbak Comprehensive Secondary School Itu Urban: Akwa Ibom School Where Students Attended Classes For One And Half Term And Promoted To The Next Grade (Class).
By Inyene David
Ntiat/Mbak comprehensive secondary school Itu, was founded in 1963 through community efforts. It was taken over by the then government of Cross River State in 1971.
It is worrisome to learn that students from the above named mentioned school attended classes for only one and half term against the three terms policy of education in Nigeria.
The ugly situation is propelled by dilapidated and comatose infrastructures in the school environment. The sensitivity of Ntiat Itam, the host village makes it impossible for authorities to feigned ignorance about the deplorable state of the school.
Ntiat Itam an autonomous community houses the following government ministries and agencies: The Ministry of Education Itu, Independents National Electoral Commission INEC, The Magistrate Court of Justice Itu, The State high Court of Justice Itu, The Defunct Nigerian Telecommunications Limited NITEL , Nigerian Postal Service NIPOST, Area Planning Authority Itu, Nigerian Prison Farm, Ministry of Agriculture Itu, Itu Itam Model Market (T-Junction), pedestrian to Premier Mary Slessor General Hospital Itu among others.
The decay in the school is so glaring to the extent that there is no building, I repeat no building to even house the Principal’s Office, Staff Room, Library, Laboratories, let alone class rooms for students. The few physical structures on ground are unhabitable, disastrous and dangerous to even house animals. Worst than the proverbial devil’s workshop. Students from JSS1-JSS3 and SSS1-SSS3 are compressed like :sardines’ into this demonic rooms, which naturally hinder academic progress, performance and excellence.
The hallmark of it is that, there is no classes during rainy season. Students were practically exempted from coming to classes during raining season. Those who flout orders or warning from their parents /guardians to attend school during rainy season always rush back home on the slightest change of weather and the climatic condition.
The corps members under the National Youth Service scheme posted to the school do decline to risk their lives to teach under these dilapidated structures and hazardous environment.
I want to state without contradiction or equivocation that , this write-up is not to tarnish the image of the government or has any political undertone, but it is a clarion call for the State Government and its Agencies, Inter-Ministerial Direct Labour Committee, Interventory Federal Agencies, Corporate bodies /organizations and well to do individuals in the state and country to come to our aid.
It is a rescue mission clarion call.
