A Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akwa Ibom and Managing Director, Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) Mr Nsima Ekere has declared the Saturday Local Government election in the state, a farce.
The obviously disappointed Ekere after waiting for voting materials till 2.30pm in his ward at Edemaya, concluded that there was no election in the state, while speaking to journalists in Ikot Abasi.
He accused the state government of collaborating with PDP and AKISIEC to plan against conducting election especially in APC strongholds across the state.
Ekere said what happened in his ward was replicated in all wards across Akwa Ibom.
“The entire process is a farce as there is no materials for election even in my ward. Democracy is having people to have their way, especially in local government which is the grassroots”.
“Looking at my village, there is no material on ground and the people have been waiting since 8am today,” Ekere said
He said that AKISIEC in his local government area tried earlier in the day to release half of the materials and the people vehemently rejected it.
He considered what happened as glaring prove of failure on the part of the state’s electoral commission, indicating it lacks the moral strength to conduct free and fair council polls.
The APC chieftain said he would support the constitutional amendment to allow INEC conduct local government elections across states of the federation, even as he rise in opposition to state police as such may also be used by state governors to stampede the people.
He noted that the Akwa Ibom people have rejected PDP, stressing that was the reason why they did want the electorates to exercise their franchise in the council poll.
“There is no other state that opposition is as strong as Akwa Ibom State.
Majority of Akwa Ibom people have rejected PDP and they are aware. That is why they don’t to put election on ground for people to vote”.
“They have already computed the results and even in my ward that AKISIEC did not bring materials, the results will be announced.” He said
Independent reports that election materials were yet to arrive some units in Ikot Abasi, including units across Edemaya, area of the Managing Director of NDDC as at 3pm, time of visit to the area. There were also general complains of late arrival of materials in other areas across the state.
In the same vein, another APC Chieftain and Senior Special Adviser to President Muhammadu Buhari on National Assembly Matters (Senate) Sen Ita Enang declared victory for APC, but however said that the PDP was at liberty to swear in anyone of its choice.
He alleged that the state government was intimidated by the show of strength by the APC and therefore decided to withhold election materials from the party. Adding that the materials came to his ward later in the day but without result sheet, reason his people decided against voting.
Also speaking to newsmen, an Observer group; the Coalition of Civil Society said their observation revealed that there was no election in the state.
Head of the Group, Mr Alli Abaca, said their visit to all the polling units across the state showed that there was no voting materials at the polling units.
However, the Publicity Secretary of PDP in the state, Mr Ini Ememobong, said that the election was free and fair.
Ememobong said that APC did not prepare for the local government election as they did not even go out on campaigns to canvass for vote.
He said that late arrival of election materials to some polling units was in exepceptional cases not applicable to APC stronghold alone.
