A Lecturer in the Department of Theatre Arts, University of Uyo, Professor Effiong Johnson, has called on Akwa Ibom State Government to pay more attention to public schools in the State.

Prof. Johnson made the call, Weekend, while reviewing the Book, “The Eagle Has Landed”, written in honour of Governor Udom Emmanuel, at the Inauguration of National and Chapter Executive Committees of Transformation Initiative for the Empowerment of Ibom People (TIEIP).

Speaking at Ibom Hall Grounds, venue for the event, the Don said the fact that Governor Emmanuel attended a Community Secondary School is a pointer that public schools have capacity to groom notable personalities, and further frowned at derogatory perceptions attached to community schools.

He called on Government to improve Community Schools in the State, saying such moves would aid them compete favourably with other topnotch institutions like the Federal Government Colleges.

“Governor Udom Emmanuel attended Community Secondary Commercial School in Ikot Akpan Essiet. He attended a ‘Comm Second”. I have been in circles where people are talking and often, they use Community Secondary Schools derogatorily. It wasn’t a School to reckon with, compared to Federal Government Colleges and other private schools. I also came out of “Comm Second” and that gives me hope.

“It means that our Community Schools have what it takes to produce Stars and this present government must do everything to encourage those schools in the Communities, to rival Federal Government Colleges, Private schools and and so on”, he said.

Earlier in his Speech, the new National Chairman of TIEIP, Otuekong Anietie Ekong, lauded Governor Udom Emmanuel for keeping to his campaign promises to the people and reiterated the Group’s resolve to partner with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State, to make the Governor’s second term bid a reality.

“It is an open secret that Governor Udom Emmanuel has done exceedingly well. His performance has humbled his enemy if any. We pledge our readiness to partner the Peoples Democratic Party in the implementation of the party’s manifestoes. Age is on my side and we promise to give our best to the people of Akwa Ibom State”, he said.

Highlight of the event was the Inauguration of new National and Chapter Executive Committees and presentation of car keys to former National Chairman and some Executive members of the Group, by the Deputy Governor.
