A viral disease is destroying Akwa Ibom State silently but steadily.
A lawyer and human rights advocate, Barrister Inibehe Effiong wrote below on his facebook page.
A viral disease is destroying Akwa Ibom State silently but steadily. The name of that disease is politics. I was in the State for the last one week and my impression about Akwa Ibom has not changed.
Everywhere you go, people are only preoccupied with politics, politics and more politics. That is the only ambition of the average person in that part of Nigeria. The type of local politics that people are playing in my state is a cause for serious concern. No ideology. No principle. It is all about the stomach.
In Akwa Ibom today, many lawyers will not take up certain kind of cases because they do not want to be seen as playing “opposition” or fighting the system. The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) had since lost its voice in the affairs of the state.
Journalists are even more political than the politicians in Akwa Ibom State. Save for some conscientious journalists who have consistently stood by the truth, members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm in Akwa Ibom State are struggling to outshine each other in their effort to please the government and politicians with mendacious and sycophantic reports. The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Akwa Ibom State is worse than useless at the moment as far as the primary responsibility of the media in the society is concerned. The NUJ is now merged with the state government. NUJ is openly partisan.
The most annoying is the so-called Christian leaders. Bishop Cletus Bassey, the erstwhile chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Akwa Ibom State, had effectively destroyed CAN in the state. Today, pastors are using religion for personal aggrandizement. Pastors are now preaching politics and selling “blessings” and “anointing” to politicians. Nearly every politician in Akwa Ibom State today has been given one “award” or the other by merchants masquerading as men of God.
Everything in Akwa Ibom State today is about partisan politics. If a woman is going to the farm, it is either she is farming for the benefit of the PDP or the APC. It is believed that everything has political undertone.
The youths are satisfied with playing a second fiddle. Young people have sold their souls to the devil and are willing to be used as thugs, attack dogs and mercenaries by corrupt politicians.
Most youths in Akwa Ibom State today are seeking stupid and senseless political patronage at the expense of their future. Youths are aspiring to be PAs, SAs to government officials which they see as the highest achievement in life. A mere Personal Assistant to a Commissioner goes about as if the world revolves around him or her.
Under the scorching sun, youths and women are wearing customised T-shirts walking on the streets singing and dancing away their future.
Professionals have no place in the Akwa Ibom State of today.
What a shame!
